Final report

The community living at the foot of Rori Hills that comprises of three clans Kakado,Kocharo and Kamigeni making the large Kakumu village are happy to express their joy after the successful completion of Oligi spring protection. Women and Children who used to make long queues while fetching water can now take just a few minutes walk to the spring and back to their homes, They used to stay for long to wait for the sediments to settle down just after a few buckets of water is drawn since it was getting very dirty due to the disturbance of the water by the drawing calabashes.

Today the water coming out of the pipes at Ologi spring is very clean and free from much contamination as it used to be in the past. A lot of echo goes to the Water4All organization, to Friends of Kabondo(FOK) and Karopa CBO for the work well done. The community is much thankful to the Water4All for their financial support and to FOK for the coordination for the project and to Karopa for the smooth implementation of the project.

We as the members of the community do appreciate so much for the funding from Water4All for the support in ensuring that people should use clean and safe water, in this respect we are urging the Water4all together with Friends of Kabondo to continue with same spirit to help the community in Kabondo to get more springs protected for example Kaboka,Ongalo,Kadongo, Nyanyayuera. This will help reduce the rampant diarrhea and other water borne diseases that are common in Kabondo. Many families still make long distances walk for clean and safe water though we hope at one time piped water will reach their door steps.

Through the clans headsmen Ologi spring will be protected by the following laid rules,

  • No one is allowed to wash or clean themselves at the water collection point but outside the fenced area

  • Cattles should never be taken close or inside the protected fenced area thus anyone who wishes to give the animals water is encouraged to fetch water and do so outside the fenced area.

  • No one should destroy or cut trees in the protected area but are advised to plant more indigenous trees around the spring

  • Those people who are doing farming around the spring are encouraged to practice good farming methods that will not interfere with the spring i.e. not to plough along the hill but to plough across the hill to prevent strong run-off down the hill.

  • The community will always carry out maintenance that are necessary at the spring to ensure that it is kept clean and function all the times.

Patrick Ouma Odongo being the eldest person in the clan where Ologi Spring is protected will be in charge to enforce and ensure the above mentioned rules are followed.
